Maintaining Impartiality

Do your duties require you to particpate in a Government matter, including a contract, involving the following persons:

• a person with whom you have or seek a business, contractual or other financial relationship
• a person who is a member of your household or is a relative with whom you have a close personal relationship
• a person for whom your spouse, parent or dependent child serves or seeks to serve as an officer, director, trustee, general partner, agent, attorney, consultant, contractor or employee
• any person for whom you have, within the last year served as officer, director, trustee, general partner, agent, attorney, consultant, contractor or employee, or
• any organization (other than a political party) in which you are an active participant?

If so, then it is possible that your ability to be impartial in the Government matter might reasonably be questioned. You should consult with an ethics official to help you determine whether you may work on the matter. Sometimes, your ethics official may authorize you to work on the matter even if there are concerns about the appearance of partiality.
